Westerly Bulldogs Dominate Season Opener with 42-6 Victory Over Chariho Chargers
The Westerly Bulldogs kicked off their 2024 season with a resounding 42-6 victory against the Chariho Chargers in Wood River Junction on Friday night. The Bulldogs' offense, led by sophomore quarterback Landon Husereau, proved unstoppable as they secured the win against their neighboring rivals.
Husereau, who set school passing records last year as a freshman, opened his sophomore season in style, throwing for 361 yards and five touchdown passes. His performance showcased why he is regarded as one of the most promising young quarterbacks in Rhode Island high school football.
The night’s standout player was freshman wide receiver Danny Cummings, who delivered one of the most sensational performances a Bulldogs receiver has ever had. Cummings caught eight passes for a staggering 267 yards and four touchdowns, consistently outmatching Chariho’s secondary and electrifying the crowd.
Sophomore Calvin Hill added to the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown reception. Hill had another touchdown called back due to a penalty but still made an impact. Caleb Williams, though officially recorded with one catch for six yards, had a spectacular 60-yard touchdown catch nullified by a flag just before halftime. In the rushing attack, Terell Hill led the way with 73 yards, including a 50+ yard touchdown run in the third quarter, sealing the Bulldogs’ dominant performance.
Westerly’s defense held strong throughout the night, limiting Chariho’s ground game to negative yards. Despite the lopsided score, Chariho had some bright spots. Sophomore Nate Quaratella returned a kickoff 90 yards for the Chargers’ lone touchdown, and quarterback Luke Felkner connected with tight end Ryan Taylor for a few impressive long passes, showing flashes of potential for the young team.
Westerly head coach Ron Sposato Jr., while pleased with the win over his former coach's team, emphasized that there is still plenty of room for improvement as the Bulldogs look ahead to a season filled with high expectations.
Next week, the Bulldogs will return home to Sal Augeri Field for a Friday night showdown against East Providence at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, Chariho will look to regroup as they travel to face off against Rogers.
With an explosive offense led by Husereau and a dominant defense, Westerly has positioned itself as a team to watch in the 2024 season.
