This Week in Chariho: Winter Magic, Hands-On Learning, and Friday Night Lights

Winter in the Chariho region brings more than just cold temperatures—it delivers cozy experiences, opportunities for discovery, and the unmistakable energy of high school sports. From immersive seasonal attractions to meaningful educational events and a big night on the hardwood, here’s what’s happening around Chariho this week.

Now through February 7, residents and visitors alike can step into a storybook setting with Holiday Season at the Hobbit Houses at The Preserve Sporting Club & Resort. Tucked into the scenic woodlands of Richmond, the Hobbit Houses offer a truly unique winter escape. With charming architecture inspired by classic fantasy tales, crackling fires, and serene natural surroundings, the experience feels straight out of a fairytale. It’s perfect for a romantic getaway, a special family outing, or anyone looking to slow down and soak in the magic of the season. Availability and specific offerings vary by date, so guests are encouraged to visit The Preserve’s website for full details, reservations, and scheduling information.

Tonight, Tuesday, January 14, families and students are invited to attend the Chariho Regional School District Tech Open House, taking place from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. This event is an excellent opportunity for middle and high school students—and their families—to explore the district’s career and technical education programs. Attendees can tour classrooms and labs, speak directly with instructors, and get a hands-on look at the skills students are learning across a variety of fields. From technology and trades to applied sciences, the open house highlights how Chariho Regional School District is preparing students for real-world success, whether their path leads to college, certification programs, or straight into the workforce.

And, of course, no week in Chariho would be complete without basketball. Friday night brings a doubleheader that showcases the heart and pride of Chariho athletics. The Chariho Girls Basketball team will defend their home court as they take on Barrington, while the Chariho Boys Basketball team heads out on the road to face South Kingstown Rebels in South Kingstown. Both matchups promise competitive play, strong community support, and plenty of school spirit. Whether you’re cheering from the bleachers at home or following along on the road, it’s a great night to rally behind Chariho.

From magical winter escapes to educational exploration and Friday night hoops, this week is packed with reasons to get out and get involved. Support local events, support local students, and most of all—support Chariho. We’ll see you out there. 🏀
