Westerly Varsity Bulldogs Secure Mercy Rule Victory Over Portsmouth

The Westerly Varsity Bulldogs achieved an overwhelming 11-1 mercy rule victory against Portsmouth on Thursday, driven by a remarkable second inning.

The Bulldogs' offensive onslaught in the second inning was the highlight of the game, resulting in seven runs. Isabella Austin initiated the scoring with a single that brought in one run. Ella Keegan followed with a two-run single, and Alex Stoehr added another single, driving in two more runs. A fielding error by Portsmouth allowed an additional two runs, establishing a commanding lead for Westerly.

Sophia Valentini delivered an outstanding performance on the mound for Westerly. Over five innings, she allowed only four hits and one unearned run while striking out five and walking one. Her control and effectiveness kept Portsmouth's offense largely in check throughout the game.

Despite a brief lead for Portsmouth, which managed to score their sole run in the second inning, Westerly quickly turned the tide with their explosive response.

The Bulldogs continued to expand their lead in the bottom of the third inning. A critical error by Portsmouth allowed another run to score, and Keegan's fielder's choice brought in yet another run, solidifying Westerly's dominance.

Throughout the game, Westerly's lineup consistently delivered, amassing a total of 11 hits. Tori Gabriele, Ava D’Ortona, and Valentini each contributed two hits, significantly boosting the team's offensive efforts. Keegan, despite going 1-for-4, led the team with three RBIs, showcasing her ability to drive in crucial runs.

While Portsmouth's pitcher did manage to record six strikeouts, and one of their batters achieved a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, these efforts were insufficient against Westerly's overwhelming performance.

Westerly's victory was characterized by a balanced approach, combining potent hitting and strong pitching. Valentini's effective control on the mound, along with key hits from Austin, Keegan, and Stoehr, paved the way for a decisive win. Westerly Varsity Bulldogs displayed their full capabilities in an 11-1 mercy rule victory over Portsmouth. Their impressive second inning set the pace for the game, leading to a dominant and well-deserved triumph.

This victory earns Westerly the right to face Ponaganset in the State Championship Finals, where the Bulldogs will have to win 2 in a row.
