The Chorus of Westerly's 2024 European Tour: A Harmonious Journey Through History and Heritage

Our community’s beloved Chorus of Westerly recently wrapped up an incredible European tour that concluded with a breathtaking performance at Windsor Castle's St. George's Chapel. This twelve-day journey took them from the heart of France to the historic cathedrals of England, marking their sixth international tour and their very first performances in France.

The Journey Begins

The tour kicked off on July 4th, a day that saw our community celebrate both Independence Day and the beginning of this exciting adventure. A total of 215 individuals, including 125 singers and about 90 family members and friends, departed for France after nearly five years of meticulous planning. Ryan Saunders and Andrew Howell, the Chorus's directors, along with their families, were already in Paris, ready to welcome the group.

"Our community has shown incredible support for this tour, and we’re grateful to everyone, especially the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA), for their encouragement.” This tour was more than a series of concerts; it was a cultural exchange and a tribute to the rich history and heritage of the venues they visited.

Paris and Chartres
The first major performance took place at the awe-inspiring Chartres Cathedral on July 7th. The concert was a resounding success, with a huge crowd in attendance, setting the tone for the rest of the tour. The following night, the Chorus performed at St-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris, a church with deep musical connections, including ties to composer Maurice Duruflé.

These performances featured Mozart's Mass in C Minor, a masterpiece that highlighted the Chorus's exceptional vocal abilities and the grandeur of the historical venues. The collaboration with Orchestre Colonne, a Parisian orchestra, added a layer of richness to the performances.

Normandy: A Solemn Tribute
One of the most poignant moments of the tour occurred on July 10th at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, Omaha Beach. The Chorus participated in a remembrance and wreath-laying ceremony to honor the fallen heroes of D-Day, marking the 80th anniversary of this pivotal event in World War II. This ceremony was a powerful and emotional experience for the participants, underscoring the deep respect and gratitude owed to those who sacrificed their lives for freedom.

Executive Director, Ryan Saunders, and retired Navy Captain Seth Paradise represented the ensemble in the wreath-laying ceremony. The inscription on the wreath poignantly read: "Dedicated to the countless brave souls who gave their lives for our freedom, from The Chorus of Westerly, Rhode Island, USA." This moment encapsulated the spirit of the tour, blending music, history, and heartfelt tribute.

Crossing to England
After a week in France, the Chorus traveled by ferry across the English Channel to Portsmouth and then to Bath. Their first major performance in England was at Worcester Cathedral on July 12th, home to the Three Choirs Festival and a venue with significant musical history. The following night, they performed at the newly renovated Bristol Beacon Concert Hall, partnering with the City of Bristol Choir and the Bath Philharmonia. This collaboration brought together over 350 performers, creating a majestic and powerful musical experience.

The Bristol performance was particularly noteworthy, with the Chorus receiving enthusiastic acclaim from both the audience and their fellow performers. It was a night of new friendships and exceptional music-making, further solidifying the Chorus's reputation as a world-class ensemble.

The Grand Finale: Windsor Castle
The tour concluded with a regal performance of Evensong at the Royal Chapel of Saint George, Windsor Castle, on July 15th. The Chapel was filled to capacity, and the music was described as ethereal, creating a perfect end to an extraordinary journey. This performance was a highlight for many, as it not only showcased the Chorus's musical prowess but also allowed them to perform in one of the most prestigious and historic venues in the world.

Reflections and Future Aspirations
Reflecting on the tour, the Chorus of Westerly's social media updates captured the joy, pride, and emotional depth of the experience. From the stunning concerts in historic cathedrals to the moving ceremony at Normandy, each moment was a testament to the power of music to connect, heal, and inspire.

Ryan Saunders and Andrew Howell expressed their gratitude to everyone who made the tour possible, from the dedicated singers and their families to the supporters and organizers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. The successful execution of such a large-scale project, especially in the wake of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, was a remarkable achievement.

As the Chorus members and their entourage returned home or continued their personal adventures, they carried with them memories of a journey that transcended borders and time. The tour not only enriched their musical repertoire but also deepened their connection to the global community and the historical events that have shaped our world.

Continuing the Legacy
